Provenance: The following information was kindly provided by the vendor:

"The provenance of my 7.65mm Mauser pistol serial no. 164650 goes back to my early childhood in Portuguese East Africa in the early 1930's. I am now in my 86th year. To my knowledge it was the property of a German Baron. Baron von der Lanken Wagonitz. He and his wife, the Baroness were camping on the banks of the Muda river. He was minding a tin mine for an absent friend who was overseas at the time. We were a cosmopolitan, multinational lot of people scattered round and about the area and malaria was rife. The Baroness fell desperately ill with Blackwater fever and the Baron asked my mother if she would nurse her back to health. My mother of course immediately agreed so she was brought back to our home the Mutashire (also on the banks of a river), and my mother nursed her back to health. The Baronesses small flock of chickens of which she was inordinately fond of came with her! When she was well I recall how the chickens would flock towards her when she called them. The Baroness taught me to sing the lullaby "Kommt ein vogel geflogen" which I remember to this day. She was a lovely person. She formed a strong bond with my mother and she and my mother corresponded for some years after they left Portuguese East Africa. On their departure The Baron gave my father the pistol in appreciation for the assistance my parents gave them."
